The World’s Largest Moose (Statue)

His name is Mac and for 31 years he was the tallest moose in the world. It’s only appropriate he resides in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan (that’s in Canada) where lots of moose roam. But in 2015 a new contender stepped in and took the title of tallest moose by being just under a foot taller than Mac. The metallic moose, in the town of Stor-Elvdal, Norway, is named Storelgen, which means Big Moose in English. That didn’t sit well with residents of Moose Jaw who vowed they’d get the title back one way or another. It took four years of debating and deciding, but in October of 2019, Mac regained his title.

The city, the fourth largest in Saskatchewan, decided to enlarge Mac’s rack (his antlers) to gain height. So, 700 pounds of steel later, Mac’s rack is back and he stands just shy of 34’ while the Norwegian moose is 33.79’ tall. In terms of weight though, Norway has the heftiest moose at 7.6 tons vs. 5 tons for Mac (one ton being 2,000 pounds).

So who cares where the tallest moose resides? The Executive Director of Tourism in Moose Jaw cares, and he says Mac draws tourists,. And for a town with just shy of 34,000 residents, tourism equals dollars. The residents of Moose Jaw are proud of Mac and plan to ensure he remains the tallest moose on earth. And Marvelous Moosey® can’t wait to meet Mac, too!
